BUND awarding ferries on Lake Constance
Today, a total of five ferry ships of the public utility company of Konstanz (Stadtwerke Konstanz) received the green environmental badge by the campaign “Soot free for the Climate” and the project “Clean Air”. These ferries are the first ones in southern Germany to receive this award.
The five ships are equipped with diesel-particulate-filters that filter out more than 900kg of ultrafine particles every year. They run 24/7 between Konstanz and Meersburg and therefore constantly contribute to the local emission levels. When they modernised their ships, the “Stadtwerke Konstanz” deliberately chose to aim for fuel consumption and emissions even below the requirements of the local shipping regulations.
The director of Stadtwerke Konstanz noted: “It is our company’s responsibility to keep our emissions as low as possible and to contribute to environmental protection at Lake Constance.”
Friends of the Earth Germany honoured this extra effort and underlines that this is a great example of putting words into effective action. The Clean Air campaign awards positive example like these five ferry boats in the hope that other ship owners follow and consider to retrofit their ships with filter systems; with benefit for Health and Climate.
